GNU Emacs 23.1.1を使っています。
mplus fontをinstallし、
"~/.emacs" に示された通りの記述をすると、

こんにちは。
現在、自分の環境では X11 すらインストールしていないために検証できないでいます。
# Emacs はターミナル上で使用しているので、フォント設定はターミナル側で行っています。

Emacs 22.x.x の時はいかがでしたか？
23 になってフォント設定の方法に変更があったような記事を見かけた気がします。
「"Emacs 23" pcf OR bdf フォント設定」あたりで調べてみると良いかもしれません。

先ず結論ですが、検索してEmacs 23.xのfont設定にしたら、Errorが消えました。
お騒がせしました。
webに載っている設定は、Emacs 23.xには利用できないということを理解しました。

結論から言いますと、Emacs 22.xではwebに載っている設定は利用できました。
