Mjpeg tools is a suite of programs which support
video capture, basic editing, playback, and
compression to MPEG-1/2 of MJPEG video. The
capture software allows MJPEG video streams in
AVI, Quicktime, and movtar format to be produced
using the Iomega Buz, Miro DC10+, Matrox Marvel,
and similar hardware. The editing and playback
tools are hardware independent, with support for
hardware accelerated playback if present. The MPEG
compression tools are based on MPEG Software
Simulation Group's reference encoder with
enhancements to provide far faster compression and
significant quality improvements.

NewVideoRecorder is a high quality video capture toolkit for Linux. It includes deep buffering of audio and video to reduce frame dropping, a smooth dropping algorithm to keep the video smooth if dropping is required, and dynamic stretching of the audio stream to exactly match the video stream. It can use v4l1 and v4l2 devices as video sources, and OSS devices as an audio source. It can produce QuickTime, AVI, NuppelVideo 0.52 files, MPEG-1 files, and all files supported by ffmpeg (through the ffmpeg library). It also includes tools and utilities for high quality video streaming (multicast and unicast).

Rawstudio can read and convert RAW-images from
many different cameras, including Nikon and Canon.
Rawstudio uses dcraw.

The DVB Driver Project has very good drivers for DVB cards by many manufacturers (e.g., Hauppauge WinTV DVB-s and WinTV Nova, Siemens, Technotrend, Galaxis, and Technisat). It supports DVB-s, DVB-t, and DVB-c.

tvtime is a high quality TV viewing application that takes input from a capture card, processes it, and displays it on the screen. It supports multiple deinterlacing algorithms and video filters.

FAME is a project to bring real-time MPEG encoding to personal computers. It is fast and configurable, and allows encoding to a file or a network stream.

CamStream is a tool for webcams and TV grabber cards that allows for streaming video from multiple video sources. It can save and/or upload (FTP) timed snapshots. It provides a GUI frontend to control the video devices.

VCR enables you to record TV programs using a video4linux-compatible video grabber card. It doesn't require a graphical environment, and by using the avifile library, it can use popular Windows codecs (DivX, Indeo Video 5) for realtime encoding.

This package contains frontends to SANE ("Scanner Access Now Easy"), including xscanimage, xcam, and scanadf. Xscanimage is a GTK-based application for scanning images that can also be used as a GIMP-plugin. Xcam is used to get images from cameras supported by SANE. Scanadf is a command line frontend especially suited for scanners equipped with automatic document feeders (ADF).
