Kannel is a WAP gateway. It attempts to provide this essential part of the WAP infrastructure freely to everyone so the market potential for WAP services, both from wireless operators and specialized service providers, will be realized as efficiently as possible. It also works as an SMS gateway for GSM networks. Almost all GSM phones can use it to send and receive SMS messages, so this is a way to serve many more clients than just those using a WAP phone. Kannel was among the first WAP gateways to be certified as WAP 1.1 compliant.

It can now transport large objects, including polyphonic ringtones, and large MMS messages. smsbox routing for SMS server module proxies (aka smppbox, emibox) has been implemented in bearerbox. This allows you to route messages to specific smsbox connections for transparent proxying of SMSC protocolls. iconv() support has been added for SMPP to allow easy character encoding. The SMPP client module contains initial support for v3.4 optional fields. Various bugfixes and improvements were added.

If a WML file uses single quotes (instead of double) around the
character set name and the HTTP result headers also specified a
character set, the WML compiler tried to use both. This has been
fixed. The wapbox will now suppress server-generated error pages if
they are in a format (such as HTML) that the client does not
accept. When suppressing an HTTP result body, the Content-Length
header is also adjusted. The Kannel 1.0.2 WAP gateway has received the
official WAP 1.1 certification by WAP Forum.
