Lziprecover is a data recovery tool and decompressor for files in the lzip compressed data format (.lz) able to repair slightly damaged files, recover badly damaged files from two or more copies, extract data from damaged files, decompress files, and test integrity of files. Lziprecover is able to recover or decompress files produced by any of the compressors in the lzip family; lzip, plzip, minilzip/lzlib, clzip, and pdlzip. It makes lzip files resistant to bit-flip, one of the most common forms of data corruption, and its recovery capabilities contribute to make of the lzip format one of the best options for long-term data archiving.

RabbIt is a mutating, caching Web proxy used to
speed up surfing over slow links like modems. It
does this by removing advertising and background
images and scaling down images to low quality
JPEGs. RabbIT is written in Java and should be
able to run on any platform. It does depend upon
an image converter if image scaling is on. The
recommended image converter is "convert" from the
ImageMagick package.

LZO is a portable lossless data compression
library written in ANSI C. It offers pretty fast
compression and very fast decompression.
Decompression requires no memory. In addition
there are slower compression levels achieving a
quite competitive compression ratio while still
decompressing at this very high speed.

Lessfs is a high performance inline data deduplicating file system for Linux. Lessfs complies to the POSIX standard and is very useful for backup purposes as well as providing storage for virtual machine images. Although lessfs is a file system that is implemented in user space with FUSE, it offers decent performance. Lessfs is capable of handling data rates up to 350MB/sec. It supports filesystem encryption.

Zutils is a collection of utilities able to deal with any combination of compressed and uncompressed files transparently. If any given file, including standard input, is compressed, its decompressed content is used. Compressed files are decompressed on the fly; no temporary files are created. These utilities are not wrapper scripts but safer and more efficient C++ programs. In particular the "--recursive" option is very efficient in those utilities supporting it. The provided utilities are zcat, zcmp, zdiff, zgrep, ztest, and zupdate. The supported formats are bzip2, gzip, lzip, and xz. The compressor to be used for each format is configurable at runtime.

Lunzip is a decompressor for lzip files. Its small size makes it well suited for embedded devices or software installers that need to decompress files but do not need compression capabilities. Lunzip is able to decompress any lzip file using as little memory as 50 kB.

Zip is a compression and file packaging utility
for Unix, VMS, DOS, OS/2, Windows 9x/NT, Amiga,
Atari, Macintosh, BeOS, SMS/QDOS, MVS, VM/CMS, and others. It is analogous to a combination of the
Unix commands tar(1) and compress(1) and is
compatible with PKWARE's PKZIP and Nico Mak's WinZip. It's part of the Info-ZIP project.

Ziproxy is a high-performance forwarding
(non-caching) HTTP proxy that gzips text and HTML
files, and reduces the size of images by
converting them to lower quality JPEGs or JPEG
2000. It is intended to increase the speed for
low-speed Internet connections (mobile, dial-up,
other). It's suitable for both home and
professional usage. Ziproxy is fully configurable
and also features transparent proxy mode,
HTML/JS/CSS optimization, operation in daemon
mode, a detailed access log with compression
statistics, basic authentication, and more.

hdup is used to back up a filesystem. Features include encryption of the archive (mcrypt/GnuPG), compression of the archive (bzip2/gzip/lzop/none), the ability to transfer the archive to a remote host or restoring from a remote host (with SSH), the ability to split up archives, and no obscure archive format (it is a normal compressed tar file).

pkt is a universal XML packet archiver. It can manipulate files for
backing up documents, transferring them across networks, emailing them,
and sharing them by other means (p2p etc). It uses plugin filters to
do the job and handles virtually any format available if there is a
plugin for it. It handles encryption, compression, conversion, parity
checking, decryption, decoding, repairing, rebuilding, and other tasks
using a universal file format (XML-based). By default, all pkt output is
in 7-bit ASCII which is UTF encoded and is compatible with XML parsers.
pkt files can be disassembled, reassembled, and repaired by hand if
necessary. pkt also supports the use of 8-bit compressed XML packets for
its archives using one of several compression algorithms. In general,
pkt will try to use the best algorithms available.
